Vanessa Receives Post-doctoral Fellowship from the American Heart Association!

Congrats to Vanessa Coelho-Santos for winning a prestigious AHA fellowship for her project: Imaging Development of Brain Microvascular Networks Under Normoxia and Intermittent Hypoxia. We are excited to see the outcome of her studies. She plans to use in vivo two-photon imaging to visualize the construction of capillary networks in cerebral cortex of mouse pups. The project also involves a collaboration with Dr. Nino Ramirez to study the effects of intermittent hypoxia on cerebrovascular development. Intermittent hypoxia mimics apnea of prematurity, a common occurrence in the NICU where premature babies repeatedly cease breathing for 20 seconds or more. It is unknown whether these short periods of hypoxia cause problems in the development of brain vasculature, and Vanessa’s project will shed some light!
